Day Ten - a healer's account

While sitting next to a bush, waiting to see if something else would happen, my thoughts were  going in circle over the events of the day. I already completed a list of the plants and healing supply I used and I was currently contemplating just leaving the camp on my own in search for some heal herbs that were quite easy to find in any area with no extreme weather. Maybe if I could convince lord Tindir to come and help me find the plants I will need, I could talk him into letting me give a sleeping drug to lord Veryacano to make sure he'd rest long enough to heal before going back on the trail. Yes, I could always dream... Or do it without asking for their opinion for that matter. It'd be a bad idea considering where we were, but it'd be good for his leg if he could leave it alone and not try to run across half the country.

With a little amusement at the idea of a drugged lord Veryacano I took another parchment and decided to write an account of the day's events, before doing anything really stupid.

Tenth day since our departure from Imladris.

The day began as well as any other, I was ignored by lady Nirhen (had she answered me I'd have had to make sure she was alright), I found the occasion to play some music (not long, but it was still nice). I know that Telpenaro appreciated the music, I don't know for the others though. I suppose that most of them just don't care one way or another as long as my music does not give away our camp or something similar...

We walked to a place to make a camp hidden among trees. Sadly, there was already someone there. A man, who was waiting for us to show up, with 3 other men to take us down in an ambush. It was foolish of them to even attempt it, but I suppose that it could not be helped even when we let his life to their leader mere days ago. As Failindo would say, humans were stupid and this kind more particularly.

Long story short, there was an ambush, there was no dead on our part, and only one injured. Lord Veryacano's leg had a sad encounter with the blade of a knife. The blade won. Well, at least these men would not bother us anymore. The fight was not so much in my range of skills so I tried my best to stay away from it. I could defend myself but considering the company I was in, others could do it better.

Once the 4 men were dealt with the hard part happened. First of all, succeeding in being noticed by lord Veryacano when everyone else's talking too. Maybe I should have just poked his wound to get his attention. Anyway, when Parnard and I got his agreement to treat his wound, I began to doubt we'd ever had it, so it was a relief that he at least gave it.

I knew I was right to take with me all kind of healing supply. Though some of it was not enough sadly. I was already half-way through a burn-balm.

I cleaned the wound before Parnard was to cauterize the wound. They changed of mind, like it would have done any good to let lord Veryacano bleed from an open wound, but finally lord Veryacano cauterized his own injury before I could suggest that if he so didn't want to have it cauterize I could always saw it together again. At least he was not bleeding anymore and the wound was cleaned before. Only now he has a burn to deal with, with all its risk of infection, the pain of the injury added to the pain of the burn and with all that, this stubborn lord is ready to take off again as fast as possible, though I wonder how much of that is the will to annoy or lose Parnard by leaving without him and how much is his natural stubbornness.

Hm... reading that account again I noticed that I left out a few things. First, some of us were scouting, though, considering who's gone I wonder if we'll just have to follow a trail of corpses to find our way ahead.

Also, as lord Veryacano was busy burning his injury, Parnard was trying to save the map he accidentally covered in blood, to no avail it seemed, and afterward, he accidentally too let it fall in the fire. Lord Veryacano and lord Tindir seemed quite mad at him for the loss of the map. They sent him back to the ranger camp we passed some times ago to get another map. As he was sent alone, I sincerely hope he'll be alright.

I read that account for a third time and sigh. No, the day didn't seem better on paper than it was in reality. Well, at least lord Veryacano will be alright, and with some luck I'll have the occasion to replenish my healing supplies before anything else happens, even if I have to diminish everything else that I carry to make more places for it. Maybe I'll cut the place of food in my bag. Or get rid of writing supply or maybe add a bag to the one I carry already. I'll see on the way what I can find and deal with it when it happens. I just really don't like the idea of having a too low healing supply. I need to gather more plants, more bandages and maybe prepare a few paste, ointments and balms. Actually, I should probably get to work and actually make some more of the burn balm before it's needed again.

Why did I even bother to put everything back in my bag yet I wonder...
