Kantâ-vilkku

The Kantâ-vilkku are beacons built by the Lumi-väki throughout Lumi-mâ. They stand especially on high hills near the paths around the Ice Bay. Not only are they visual beacons that help the traveler find their way (even in storms), each one also is the location of a cache of life-saving supplies like salted fish, extra furs, a lavvu (traveler's tent), and bone and kindling for a fire. Even in summer when the snows melt almost all the way to Sûri-kylä, traveling in Lumi-mâ is a challenge, particularly for a single traveler, and in winter it's far, far more so; so it is everyone's responsibility to offer aid to anyone else in need. After all, when you help a traveler in trouble, next time, you might be the traveler in trouble needing that help.
