The Highroller's Journal, Entry 2

Well, I've been here a few weeks now, and so far so good. I found a few low-level, somewhat legitimate jobs. I've scouted out most of the surrounding areas, and I have to say, it's a rather nice place! Rolling hills, green meadows, a nice little town... pretty much perfect in that respect. The countryside is overrun by brigands though. Maybe not entirely bad (at least not for me), but a nuisance. There's a dense forest southwest of town, found a good spot for hunting in there. I shouldn't run out of hide for tailoring, which brings me to my next point: a vocation. Turns out that my little hobby was good for something after all! I fashioned myself a new cloak, and some armor for some other adventurers passing through. It's a nice little investment, should get me started with contacts. I heard about a hunting lodge in town where I might be able to find some odd jobs, so I'll be checking that out next.

So I checked out the hunting lodge, and it seems that it'll be a good source of income for me... at least while I'm still new. They all seemed to want something from the Barrow-downs, but no one else wanted to go. Their loss, honestly. Lots of danger there, sure, but the jobs are easy. "Grab stuff from piles of rubble," "Bring me some rubbings of carvings on pillars," "Kill some of those nasty crawlers that seem to infest the place." Eugh, they really do infest that place though. Can't tell if they're bugs or animals either. Anyway, met a younger lad, maybe 21 or so, Rohirric, running around the downs with nothing but a staff made of Ash wood. Ended up saving his hide from some Barghests, as they're apparently called. Mean, wolfish creatures with a stocky build and a barbed tail. Fierce, too, but I digress. Anyway, the guy gave me his name, Heruthryth, and told me to look him up if I needed anything. So I did. Foolish he may be, but he's a crack researcher and not that shabby of a weaponsmith. Made me some new daggers, better make than the old blade and dagger I've been using. Honestly, he's not that bad, and he mentioned getting me to run him stuff from the Barrows and other ruins. I took him up on it, obviously. I need more contacts, soon, though this'll do for now. The longer I wait, the harder it'll get to build up a network.
