Met that Lilly woman yesterday. Madilon, the former Mrs. Birchwood. Now she was always an odd one, staying at home with her nose stuck in a book all the time, just like that mad mother of hers. But it seems she's lost it completely since Mr. Birchwood took off.

Suddenly she's gone for weeks on end, and then she returns with these wild stories about meeting elves in the Blue Mountains. Seems ordinary decent Bree-folk aren't good enough for her any more. And Mrs. Periwinkle said she even saw Madilon talking to that disgusting bird she keeps dragging around.

I feel sorry for her father, I do. Tom Lilly was always a good, honest trader, but getting his business wrecked by that no-good son-in-law must have been crushing. Heard Tom left Bree now with his crazy wife, trying to start over somewhere else. Didn't even tell Madilon where they were going, or so I hear...
