Outward Appearance

With her black hair, grey-green eyes, and fair skin, Mornariel's appearance is largely unremarkable. She speaks softly, giving the impression of being calm and self-contained, though at times a mischievous humour bubbles forth. She usually wears a pendant comprising a green gem hung round with threads of gold and silver, and a golden circlet set with similar green stones. As a rule, she wears elegant robes and dresses, though her garb is far more practical when she ventures beyond elvenhomes.

Background

Once of Nargothrond, Mornariel now divides her time between Imladris, Mithlond, and the elf-refuge of Duillond that lies between them. Only lately has she returned to Imladris, after around two hundred years away - here she spends much of her time in the libraries, making fresh copies of dilapidated texts or updating her own works. She can also often be seen wandering through the lands and examining the flora and fauna of Arda, with a sketchbook in one hand and a pen in the other. On longer journeys, she can be observed with a train of pack-horses carrying writing materials, supplies, and goodness-knows what else. Despite her solitary tendencies, she does sometimes emerge into elven society - though she prefers listening to talking.     Elves of Beleriand who fled to the Isle of Balar and the Mouths of Sirion after the destruction of the elven cities may recognise her as a quiet and polite young scholar who sought permission to write down their tales; elves of Brithombar may even recall her as the daughter of Ondotano, one of the many stone-masons of Finrod's folk who aided the Falathrim in their rebuilding of the Havens.     Those who have read the histories of Beleriand extensively may recognise her as the author of some texts concerning its flora and history, most notably a rather lyrical illustrated book on Nargothrond. However, while these earliest works give the author as 'Mornariel', later ones use the epessë 'Curudegil'. Books written under this name include more on plants, but also an expansion into the study of animals, and indeed various texts on language and linguistics which form her contribution to the corpus produced by the Lambengolmor.     When making new acquaintances, she often introduces herself as 'Rivornieth' (a Sindarised version of 'Mornariel') - the polite thing to do in a society where Quenya has not been widely spoken since the First Age.
