A Telling of Tales in the Yondershire

Lawd Nik Arives to Gamwich, by Lily Mapledore

Upon the wild far northern bounds of the Shire, strange things may oft come to pass.  Wandering companies of Elves may be glimpsed, flitting through the trees, or rough and queer folk may stray upon the borders, though oft they find the sturdy hobbits no easy prey and pass back into the night, or passing giants and unnamed beasts may be seen from afar, touching upon these rough lands in their unknowable wanderings to far adventures.  Yet it is rare indeed for word of these strange happenings to return to the Greater Shire, to the civilised towns of Michel Delving and Hobbiton and Brockenborings, with such tales often becoming confused and respun in the telling.

Until now...

Date:
August 30th, 2024
Time:
15h server time, story to begin c. 16h
Location:
The Brimful Quiver, Gamwich

Event details:

Some days ago, the humble hobbits of Gamwich, a rustic and wild town on the edge of the northwest Shire, were startled by the discovery of one of the Big Folk, wandering in the wild woods that press about their settlement.  His clothes were ragged and torn, his face bruised and bloodied, his step haltering and his body famished.  With great kindness, the hobbits brought him back to Gamwich, tending to him and restoring him to health and happiness.

And so they learnt that he was a hero, a great warrior from the battles far off in the South, now wandering in lonely adventure, and they were startled and delighted, for some little report had come even to that distant hamlet of the great wars of recent years, and they knew that mighty were the deeds that had been done.

Now the wars were done, and he had (for some weeks) been alternately the hunter and the hunted of a pack of trolls, ill-favoured brutes who had waylaid him and caused him great hurt.  He had slain some of their number, and had been engaged in hunting and evading the rest when the hobbits had found him, battle-soiled and weary from his martial toil.

Several weeks have now passed.  The man has told some little of his tale, and it is a curious tale indeed.  He is not only a war hero, but an exile from his lands, and a scholar in deep and ancient mysteries.

Rumour of the man’s tarrying has reached even the genteel ears of the rather more civilised hobbits in the Greater Shire, and travellers on the road (such as the Dwarvish merchants who often journey between their holds in the east and west) have perhaps turned aside to Gamwich, adding a few days to their journey in the interest of meeting this curious lord.

However, it seems likely that the hero will not tarry much longer in Gamwich…for (though none would dare say such aloud) it would seem that the great lord is growing weary of hobbit hospitality almost as swiftly as the hobbits are growing weary of hosting him.  For he eats much and drinks more, and they ask many questions and leave little peace.  And there are some, even among the rustic and unlearned Gamwich hobbits, who are not unwise, and who begin to question whether this mighty warrior is all he says…

So it is that even as a contingent of curious hobbit folk from the Greater Shire make excursion into the Yondershire in order to see this hero for themselves, it seems likely that the stay of Lord Nicthalion Tallow draws to an end.  But not, of course, without one final story for his newly arrived audience in the bustling Brimful Quiver…and, perhaps, one or two other surprises along the way, for Tallow and Gamwich alike…

Some information to consider if you would like to attend:

- For obvious reasons, this event will be post war.  Though we won’t set an exact date, it is certainly post Scouring of the Shire, and not more than three years after the War of the Ring (ie, the Shire's edict concerning Men has not yet been passed (though Men would still be a very rare and strange sight) and it is highly plausible that, while most in the Shire know something of the great deeds done by the hobbits of the Fellowship, the exact nature of these events would be a matter of rumour and gossip for many).

- Anyone, of any race, is welcome to attend.  Given the Yondershire's location and demographics, Hobbit characters are of course to be preferred (though they need not be locals, for Tallow has been in Gamwich "recovering" for some time and word might have spread as far as Bree-land).  Dwarves would also fit very well.  Elves and Men will be allowed, but should not be preferred, though it may be possible to imagine compelling reasons for such folk (in small numbers) to be there.

- Consider why your character would be there…and what they would (or wouldn’t) know.  There can be great fun to be had if some PCs possess more knowledge than the hapless Tallow…or if they do not, but can spot a liar when they see one.  But the joy of Lord Nicthalion Tallow is that some people likely do believe him…or even if not, are sufficiently entertained by him to overlook his more egregious exaggerations.  And even if your character was present in Gondor or Rohan during the war…how much do they really know of the events told by Tolkien?  There is, ultimately, no right way to approach an event like this - simply consider what your character would and would not know, and how they might reasonably react when confronted with a figure like Nick.

- Please feel free to send me a mail on LA for further details or information.

- The event will start around 3pm server time, with the story telling starting at about 4pm - with any luck, this will allow Europeans to get to bed at a reasonable hour and Americans time to hop on (latecomers are, of course, very welcome).

- Nine-fingered Frodo sends his regards.
