A Hymn to Elbereth

Aerlinn an Elbereth

(Composed and translated into the Common Tongue by Uilossiel of Imladris)

O Elbereth, unfolding now thy mantle dark and deep
Enrobing verdant fields in slumber still,
Come bring the summer's rest to every hill
As eventide is clothed with velvet darkness and with sleep.

Bring forth thy choicest jewels, each a peerless, fiery gem.
Though in the West the sunlight quickly fades,
The East sparkles in myriad shades
Of stars opening like jeweled flowers upon a diadem.

Fair Star-Kindler! May this be only first of many more
Evenings of purest, breathless wonderment
Where each new starry thrill from thee is sent -
Bright largesse strewn from thy own hand's lavish and jeweled store.
