Outward Appearance

His fingers tap incessantly in all occasions but in the midst of a good story. A youth with thick dark hair, Marty is dressed in the lively colours of Bree-land in autumn. He's quick to grin, with bright boyish eyes, and freckles across his strong nose, but attempts a watchman's vigil; he carries a  keen knife, its sheath adorned with old Bree-land motifs.

When he opens his mouth he's a clear Bree-lander and speaks warmly. He always has, and most youth of the Four Villages would know him. Those who know him best would tell of his fondness for stories of heroism and the Watch.

Background

The son of Jonnald Alder, a worn, but stubborn Watcher turned farmer, and Arlett Alder, a Baywillow and skilled weaver of Bree. He has no brothers but many cousins, and is an easy friend to Bree-landers. He is fond of the lakes of Bree-land and the forest, but brigands have made him more wary of the road.

"Oh, that Alder? I know Marty. Son of old Jon and Arlett. Pleasant kid, buys a cider every time he comes, and never forgets his manners."

—Lizbeth Honeymeade, proprietor of the Comb and Wattle Inn

"Marty's my son. A bit of a dreamer, but his heart's in the right place; he works hard when he's got his mind set on something—don't tell my wife, but he'd fit in with the Watch. He's good on the dog and he stays out of trouble for the most part. I trust him."

—Jon Alder, his father

"If you ask me, he's too fond of them traveling men's stories."

—Karl Green, a friend
