Outward Appearance

Airanor is tall, and fair of face. His hair is red as the glory of dusk, and his eyes are blue and deep. He always prefers to wear simple garments, as modesty is one of the most necessary virtues when the art of mending hearts is needed.

But his most important traits are rather perceivable than visible.

More than wisdom or intelligence, there's something in his eyes or his semblance that eases and lights the hearts of the burdened, but infringes fear or anger in the hearts of those who hold dark intentions.

Most of the time he can be seen carrying his old harp Nethril, which once was played by his former master Daeron of Doriath.

Background

Estë, healer of hurts and weariness!

Dweller of the Gardens, consort of Lórien

Mistress of mending, whose gift is rest:

Tend to us!

Airanor is a Sindarin Elf who dwelt in Doriath during the First Age as Apprentice of Daeron, lore-master and minstrel of King Thingol. Airanor had a deep affection for him, as much as a son can have for his father.

But it is known that Daeron fell in love with the King's daughter, Lúthien; and not having been reciprocated by her, he left the kingdom and was never seen again.

Airanor greatly mourned him, and his loss became a burden he barely could bear.

Time passed, until one night he wandered through the forest and fell asleep in a clearing, and saw himself crossing a far garden in the West. He heard someone weeping among the trees, a voice deeply sad and deeply beautiful, gloomy but holy. When he woke up, Airanor found his mourn had fade away, fully comforted, and the burden was lifted. He attributed this to Nienna, and so he entrusted himself to her guidance, and embraced in learning to comfort the worn souls through words and songs.

He was always needed, more at times of grim than at times of boon, for in his words lingered an echo of Lórien's Garden beyond the seas.

After the War of Wrath, Airanor went to Harlindon, under the leadership of Celeborn. With the merge of the Sindar People with the Silvan Elves, he became a scribe and focused on transcribe or adapt the Old Silvan texts to Sindarin.

Finally dwelling in Caras Galadhon, as the number of his people diminished year after year and the burden of the world grew upon the eyes of the Eldar, Airanor dreamed once more: he was led in dreams through the trees of Lórien, and heard not weeping this time, but laughter, a divine laughter, and then he saw white shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise. It was the West, the laughter of Estë, the coasts of the Imperishable Lands.

This vision kindled Airanor's heart, and with it he realized there was a calling, not only for himself but to all his people, to lighten up their hearts, and gather strength, for dark and troublesome times would come, but the shores of Aman were open.

After the disappearance of Daeron, he decided to maintain his master's memory alive through most of his songs and poems as the main protagonist, although it may seem anachronistic to the reader.

Among other poems and songs, Airanor is the author of "I Lanthir Nimrodel" (The Nimrodel Falls) and "Nírnaeth na Daeron" (Lamentations of Daeron), which are part of Lothlórien's Parf Edhellen.
