Outward Appearance

A tall, stately Sindë with the broad shoulders and strong limbs of a practiced archer, Lothûlien of Lindon is no delicate waif. With high cheekbones, a low nose bridge, and gray eyes dark as the stormy sea, her visage cuts a distinctive profile. Stony stoicism is her constant companion. She moves silently and with an unaffected sort of grace; in the absence of heavy footfalls, she comes heralded by only the fragrance of the white garlands that she likes to braid into her long raven hair. Yet Lothûlien usually eschews even such simple adornments as flowers in favor of her weapons—her quiver, knives, and hunting bow—her armor, and her raiment gray as mist.

Background

Little is known of Lothûlien's youth, and what few details that she has been willing to share have largely been swallowed by the tides of time. She had a family once, as she was born in the twilit cradle of Doriath and thus one of the Iathrim, but the unburdened young elf-maid she was—if she ever was so young and guileless—is long gone. An unenviable survivor of both the Second and Third Kinslayings, she only entered the annals of the Sindar well after the fall of Doriath.

After the events of the First Age, she moved to Harlindon, and it was there—by the western shore—that she met the astronomer Alagosdil. Both curious souls, Lothûlien and Alagosdil became fast, if unusual, friends. Neither of the two had seen the vast lands of Eriador and Rhovanion, nor the kingdoms of the South and East beyond them, and so they resolved to journey out together. Sailing south along the coast of Ennorath, the two friends spent centuries traveling around Middle-Earth.

When Sauron made war with the Elves, Lothûlien was unwilling to lose her home once more. She hardly hesitated to raise arms and don armor in defense of Middle-Earth. Though Lothûlien fought in many battles throughout the Second Age, she sought little glory for herself in war, preferring to keep to the shadows and out of the light. Her aversion to battle-fame was so great that it was said that the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, she grew so weary of war that she laid down her bow and vanished from the battlefield altogether, slipping into the mists of history.

In truth, Lothûlien did not tire utterly of Middle-Earth and sail into the West. Nor did she lay down her bow and vanish into the comfortable obscurity of a peaceful life. She became a ghost on the edge of darkening forests, a whisper on the wind, a stranger who was still old when the crumbling ruins around her were young and bustling with life. While her people may have dwindled and faded, she has remained, charting the wilds and counting the stars until the day duty demands that she once again rise to battle against the Enemy.
