In the time of darkness and ruin, houseless desperate men went astray: remnants of war and defeat, and lands laid waste; some Men driven into the wild for evil deeds. He was with the Gaurwaith, also called Wolf-Men in north-west, Greenway. They hunted and gathered the food they could; yet in winter when hunger hit them, they were like voracious wolfs. Some fifty of these man had joined one band, wandering in the woods beyond the western marches; and they were hated scarcely less than Orcs, for there were some outcasts hard of heart, hater of their own kind. For years they plagued the Men of the west in Bree-land and beyond.
