During the Second Age, Echmaethor lived in the realm of Eregion for many peaceful years. When Sauron invaded Eriador and laid siege on the chief city of Eregion, Ost-en-Edhil, Elrond was sent with an army from Lindon to reinforce the Noldorin realm. He was unable to break the siege, however, and was forced to retreat northwards. Elrond gathered as many Elves and Men as he could find as he fled north, where the retreating army finally made a stand in the valley of Imladris. Echmaethor fought among them and remained in Imladris, where he continued to train rigorously to further hone his skills with spear and shield. The devastation that was caused to his homeland still fresh in mind, he vowed never to lay down his spear as long as enemies threatened the Free Peoples of Eriador. Strengthened by this ardent vow, he seized every opportunity to ride out and meet the enemy on the battlefield.
