Corgis

Corgis

(I wrote this poem having been asked to judge the Corgi section at the 2nd Four Farthing Bree Combined Dog Show roleplaying event at the Hobnanigans Field, Sep 15th, 2024.)

How wondrous is the corgi,

A breed beyond compare,

They have such a strange history,

Which I with you would share.

A ‘corgi’ is a ‘dwarf dog’,

That is what that word means,

So should you find them stubborn,

Just blame it on their genes!

Less than one foot off the ground,

They’ll not back down in battle,

And way back when these feisty chaps

Were used for herding cattle.

Yet from such lowly origins,

Serving the herder’s need,

Some came in palaces to dwell,

Became a royal breed.

So now I’d like to share with you,

The qualities I seek,

Of what I’ll look for in your pets,

I now shall plainly speak.

A corgi should be lively,

Intelligent and strong,

With ears pricked and foxy face,

Dense coat, but not too long.

Step forward when I call you up,

To see all that I need,

That I may choose a winner here,

To be the Best in Breed!
