It is difficult to imagine two places less alike than Forochel and Bree-land. The cold, sparsely-populated northern lands have a beauty about them, it is true, but with the greatest of respect to the Lossoth, it was with relief that I began the long journey back to Bree.
The distance is so great, I was not entirely sure if I would arrive in time for the event - and I was initially reluctant to participate. I do not have an especially large wardrobe, indeed, the outfit I wore was given to me by a good friend. But in these dark times, one must find joy and light-hearted moments whenever possible - and tonight's event certainly provided that.
It was lovely to see so many people attend. Not just Men of Bree, but Men (and Women) from other regions, along with Hobbits, fellow Elves and I'm sure there must have been others among the crowd too. It was a good-natured event, with some creative clothing choices. I was rather nervous when my turn came, but I took heart from what others had done, not just parading the clothes, but performing an elegant Elf-dance to match the Formal category.
The competition was in a friendly spirit - after all, in this sort of thing, the main focus is not so much on who wins, but on enjoying ourselves. Taking a break from our daily lives and troubles for a while and celebrating the more creative things in our world. There were certainly some creative choices for costumes - and even the judges were persuaded to get involved.
It made a welcome change from riding on frantic errands or battling ice-worms, and I hope I can take part in something similar in future.
My thanks to Ryheric for informing me of it (and doing so in time enough that I could attend).
