Episode 4: Supper at the Pony
‘This table is much too large,’ said Piper stating the obvious.
‘Shall we move to another one?’ asked the Bounder.
‘Yes, let’s!’ they both said together.
After finding a proper Hobbit-sized table…
The Bounder asked, ‘So all of this is about finding a Lost Mathom?’
‘Yes, that’s right,’ Piper answered between bites of food.
‘So what’s a mathom anyway?’ asked the curious Bounder.
‘Mathoms are things people don’t want anymore,’ Piper answered manner-of-factly.
‘Yet you want one?’ inquired the Bounder.
‘I guess so,’ Piper tentatively answered. ‘We just don’t want them to be lost. I think.’
‘Who’s we?’ asked the slightly cross Bounder.
‘You know,’ Piper defensively replied. ‘My new friends at the Green Dragon.’
The Bounder seemed skeptical. ‘Once you find this legendary “Lost Mathom” won’t it become a “Found Mathom”?’
‘You know,’ Piper laughed. ‘I hadn’t thought of that.’
The Bounder pressed him. ‘And having found it, then what?’
‘I don’t know. I haven’t thought about that, either,’ answered Piper, now sounding slightly more serious.
‘Sounds to me as if you haven’t thought about much of anything,’ proclaimed the concerned Bounder.
‘You’re wrong. I’ve thought plenty about what I’ll be eating along the way.’ Piper grinned, then continued eating his supper.
