Recruit Duty - Not More Work Sir?

Date:                First day of the twelfth month
Recruit name:     Cween

Description of activities:

Having seen the notice in the jail regarding the lack of materials to craft weaponry for the guard force I took it upon myself to answer the call. I am handy with a pick-axe and have gathered ore from the lands around Combe many times while assisting the village smith, the poor chap has a dodgy elbow that really swells right up in cold weather. My mother was his sister’s friend’s aunt’s cook back in the day so we were duty bound to help out.

Form past experience I know the marshes south east of Combe are a good spot to find veins of copper so this is where I concentrated my search. However, recent reports from civilians in the area, including both my brothers at the nearby lumber mill, have suggested all sorts of creatures lurking in the mists swirling around those parts. I had also had a run in with a goblin on the northern edge of the marsh and was unsure if they had spread throughout the area. I therefore stuck firmly to the edges to avoid an ambush.

While the edge was clear of this mist it was not clear from wildlife. My ears were soon ringing with the neeking and breeking of those awful creatures, and while they occasionally looked like there were going to spring an attack they were quite happy to leave me alone if I left them be.The spiders on the other hand…

These were similar to spiders I have seen creeping into Far Chetwood these days, which are also an aggressive breed that should be avoided. I now believe they are spreading in land from the marshes.

Following a rich vein I headed somewhat deeper into the marsh, although I was careful not to turn from my course so I could easily determine the way back out of that foul mist. As I progressed inward the spiders were more frequent, I noticed that the concentration of the creatures increased the nearer I got to a large ruin I spotted out into the marsh, although why theses beasts had any connection to such a place I have no idea.

I did not approach the ruin. The numbers of spiders was more than I could cope with alone, especially with a heavy pack full of ore. I had also lost sight of the edge of the marsh and was worried about the return journey. I carefully about turned and retraced my steps back. As luck would have it I was soon at the edge of the marshland and gathered the remaining ore I needed from this relative safe position.

The ore has now been smelted and has been left in the jail for collection.
