The air is impregnated with the smell of burnt wood and the ashes are moved by the wind, falling on the street and the people who gather in the square of Archet and surroundings. Virtually all the locals who have survived the merciless attack of the Blackwolds bandits, led by the traitor Calder, gather together in the street. Some have lost their homes, others are frightened and looking for companionship, and others are dedicated to helping the wounded and caring for their neighbors. This is the case of Kate, who has not hesitated to light a campfire near the prison alley and uses her food supplies to make a good, comforting broth that improves the spirits of the survivors.
Along with several others, Lorrey sits around Kate's bonfire, slowly sipping hot soup as tears stream down his face. His gaze is fixed on what is left of Maggie's inn. For Lorrey, the inn was his second home, and Maggie his best friend. Now the building is incinerated, and the remains of the innkeeper lie somewhere in her shattered business.
Godwig the Lazy finds himself next to Lorrey placing a bandage on Ann's arm. The veteran hunter has a somewhat deep cut and must be prevented from losing more blood. It is Oromë's blessing that the hunters came to defend Archet. We couldn't have resisted the attack without you -says Godwig. Ann smiles slightly, and adds: But you've also had some good warriors to defend the village, like those two there. Ann points her head at the remains of the Mad Bagger Inn, on which sits a young man and a woman. I have seen them use their sword and staff swiftly against the bandits tonight.
Those present turn their eyes towards the couple, and Kate comments: Oh yes! Kennet has been very brave in defending the village with his life. He's not a man of arms, he's honored that he's put himself in danger like that. But the woman... I don't know who she is. Ann answers Kate's question: She is a young woman from the north who came looking for her father, a certain Berthaion. Last year he stayed at the Hunting Lodge for several nights. A reserved guy, but he didn't seem to have bad intentions. And the girl doesn't seem like a bad person either. Jon comments that she and Kennet have been watching the bandits' movements in recent days, and that has been providential in protecting Archet.
A couple of yards away, his face and clothes stained with ash and blood, Tim heard the whole conversation. It was he who last day heard the chat of the couple in Maggie's inn, so he doesn't hesitate to raise his voice and add: There are still well-meaning people out there, and we've been lucky that this woman ended up here in these fateful days. Don't hesitate to thank her before she leaves. To her and to Kennet, because I'm afraid we won't see either of them again as soon as they start their journey away from here... -he says sadly.
