Account of Iriul, First Entry

Journal of Captain Iriul of Tinnudir

It has now fallen to me,the captaincy of Tinnudir and Alaghir's company. After knowing the man for a lifetime, his luck was finally spent upon the stormed waves of the Belegaer Sea, along with many of our kinsmen. In fact, I return alone. This journal will act as the only witness to my journey if i should fail, and if indeed i live to write it to it's last page it will be the account of my Captaincy from beginning to end, however soon or late it may come.

The road along the coast has been long, and i left Dol Amroth with so much doubt that i turned my course half a dozen times. It is the debt I hold to Gwindeth that calls me back to Evendim, and no less a sense of duty to our old Captain. His time at the head of this company started when Amendil fell, and we were all certain after the fall of Annúminas that his lead would be worthy of following. Yet, the man grew old, and grim, and the weight of his duties it seems, made him infamous.

It's this mantle I've got to take, and the promises he made to Gwindeth that are now mine. This path i'll choose for myself, since on my road back i've heard kinsmen speak of this "Grey Company". I've lost all, and they can ask no more of me. Were Ariewen still here for us to look to, she would advise me to rest, and ward the old city as we always meant to. By Nenuial, if I saw her I would break... Alaghir held her as high as his own wife, what would news of his death be to her, I wonder.
