Background
When you walk past the fields and farms of the Shire, there is a chance that you will see a little, old hobbit working the fields. He wears a shabby, old, purple tunic and you can clearly see that he doesn't like to be interrupted. But there is more to this little, old, grumpy fellow than you might think! For once, in times long past, Merragrim was the thing that he now cant stand: a foolish, young hobbit going off on an adventure!
Merragrim was born on a farm in the West Farthing. His father was Adelgrim Fallohide and his mother was Daisy Took. He was raised to be a farmer and to take care of the family farm when his father would be gone. But Merragrim, being a young lad, did not feel like spending his entire life on a farm. He often hung around with Thergoin. A dwarf from the blue mountains and Merragrims best childhood friend. Thergoin told Merragrim lots of stories from all the places he had been to and the hunger for adventure began to grow within the young hobbit la. After some arguments with his parents, Merragrim bought an old lute and fiddle, and left the farm.
For quite some time, Merragrim was quite a successful bard. All the way from Needlehole to Buckland hobbits knew of his beautiful songs and tales. He even went to Bree to perform once. But after a few years of traveling, adventuring and chasing his dreams the inevitable happened. Merragrim ran out of gold and had to sell his garments, fancy hats and instruments. After some time, living like only little more than a beggar, he returned to his family farm where he spend the rest of his days.
Merragrim had learned his lesson. Adventures are no way of making a living and it is only hard and honest work that will give you a good life.
Even though he can be quite the grumpy, old hobbit nowadays, those who get to know him better will find out how likeable this hobbit can be. Will you? Visit the Shire and ask for old, grumpy Merragrim. For he has lived in the West Farthing near Michel Delving for years and will remain there for years to come.
