A New Dawn - Chapter 2 - Silent Agreement

The members had started squabbling almost instantly about who should lead them in the future. Half of them seemed to be carrion feeders if little else, suggesting different deals with each other to gain the power. Casually, Newell strolled through the Dawnhall and out the door, following the mute he had seen faintly grin at the words that came from the plateau. Outside, he saw the fire that was lit up, and the heavy smell of smoke and burning wood made a stark contrast with the fresh and lively evening air. Around there fire stood two men and a woman, all members of the Dawn. The young woman was rather pretty. She had long brown hair and what seemed to be green eyes, though it was hard to say in the darkness that was only broken by the fire they stood by. One of the men was a rather tall man, taller than Newell himself he wagered, with dark brown hair of middle length and eyes that would pierce through the dark as cold blue icicles. The second man, however, was the man Newell wanted to see: Lucifen the Mute. Glaring across the hall, Newell had noted the faint grin that had crept over his face as the news of the missing captain had been announced. Newelll wondered whether he could he have had something to do with it, yet wagered it mattered little, and even if it did it was a question better left unasked as long as he had his own intentions of becoming captain now.
Newell gave them a nod as he slung a fur cloak over his shoulder and stepped closer to the fire warming his hands. The four people stood in silence for a while until the man with the eyes that could only be matched by the cold spoke up a bit. "Cold out here today," he heard the icy eyed man say, though no one bothered to respond. They stood silently, seemingly all pondering or just enjoying the fire before the man spoke to break the silence again "Well, looks like we're leaderless again. Any of you decided who you are going to vote for?" His face showed a glint of something, Newell decided, but whether it was greed and lust for power he could not say. Lucifen did nothing but shrug once as he usually did, he was a man of few words ever since the former captain Hyrien cut out his tongue, or so Newell had heard. He could well imagine the slight satisfaction that had crept across his face when the words were uttered, even if he had something to do with it himself, yet he had to elect his new leader all the same. The girl seemed just as silent as the mute. Newell nodded a bit as the icy blue eyes met his own. "Aye, I have my ideas." Ice-Eyes grinned a bit, his face plainly suggesting Newell to speak as to who he would choose. When he didn’t, the man spoke up. "Beg my pardon, but who are you again?" the man said with cold courtesy. "Newell Blackwood, serjeant of the Bloody Dawn, and who are you?" came back just as cold. A thought swam through Newell’s head. “Give away nothing you don't need to”, but the moment the thought left him, the man answered. "Ralyn." Newell kept an eye on the man for a moment, noticing the facial features. He was chiseled and frozen, an ice block, but useful if used right.
Newell waved over Lucifen who looked back at him warily, snorting once and spitting on the ground before starting to walk with him. They didn’t have to walk far before they were out of earshot of the two others. As they walked, Newell began to talk. "A good captain needs men he can trust with words he doesn't want spoken to others, a man who will be willing to, well, handle the more discrete matters as well as keep silent about it." They slowly walked in the dark, surrounded by the biting cold. "Your tongue is very conveniently kept from wagging as it is, and I would consider it a chance that was best taken," Newell continued as the two kept on walking. Lucifen nodded briefly as if to acknowledge the words. “The man may be a mute, but he's not deaf yet,” Newell thought as they walked. The two had been walking down the road from the Dawnhall and were returning now, yet before entering Newell walked over to the stone wall and leaned back to rest on it, looking at Lucifen with his dark eyes, and surveying his every expression and movement. "So you intend to live the rest of your days as nothing more than servant?" he grinned, before giving him a pat on the shoulder. "Go for me and it'll be a bit more interesting, I promise you that." Lucifen stood silently for a few heartbeats contemplating the words before answering with a shrug and then a nod. Newell answered it with a pat on the shoulder and a fat grin "Well looks like we have a deal then" he said, as he stretched out a hand for Lucifen to take, and as he did Newell dragged him in close to look him closely in the eye. Sorrow, anger, lack of purpose Newell thought as he kept his eyes on the man, before nodding a bit and spitting at the ground once. "Go on then, and I trust you won't be speaking too highly of what we discussed here today unless you know you can... entice the person to join our cause." Newell said as he let go of Luc's hand, who once more nodded before walking slowly back towards the bonfire. "I would have thought it would take more than that, but he's desperate for a purpose... Many of them are," he said to himself as he saw Luc walking up to the fire, and standing silently as if nothing had happened. He pinched the bridge of his nose before he wandered back into the Dawnhall to visit his prisoner.
