The Trap Sprung

The notary slowly pulled the door slightly ajar behind him.

"I told him that I had finished his task and showed him the parchment, but I don't think he saw it....He was in his senses enough to want to see his 'cousin' though."

The darkened figure nodded her head and drew the cowl up over her head.

The notary shook his head, "I doubt if he'd see you clearly even without that, the fever has worsened. I told him his cousin's name was ...Fryda..."

A faint smile appeared under the cowl. The dark figure pushed past the shriveled, ink-stained man and made to enter the sick-room. The Notary grabbed her arm, halting her for the moment.

"My payment...it is due. I've done what you asked."

Eyes looked at him unblinking from under the hood. "You will get what you were promised".

He released her arm, and she disappeared into the blackness of the room.

"Cousin..." came the voice from the bedside.  Heathbrand mumbled some unintelligible words.

"Shh...shh. No matter. I will take care of everything..."

The notary quietly closed the door, and walked through the Great Hall and into the night. It was up to her now, and he would receive his payment one way or the other. After all, truth can be a deadly cudgel and it rested in his hands.
