Memories of the past - Champion of song

Stars filled the midnight sky over Rivendell, the moon full and bright, bathing the city in its pale light.

The small dark haired boy rolled and tossed in his bed before waking and curling up in a ball, shivering and darting his eyes back to the corners of the room. "Naneth! Naneth please come quickly!" Cynraede shouted as he tried to hide himself, covering his face with the blanket before hearing the door open. "Cynraede, what is the matter?" The woman stood in the doorway, her skin almost glowing even in the dark. "In the shadows, there is something in the shadows!" The woman gracefully walked over and lit a candle before taking a seat on the edge of his bed. "My dear Cynraede, without light, things look more terrifying in the dark." She brushed the thick black hair from his eyes and gave him a warm smile. "But it had wings, and claws! I saw it over there..." Alkawen stood and walked over to the corner, smiling at what she saw. "My dearest child,  it is but a moth, I doubt it would eat you." Her lips pulled back into another smile as she leaned in and whispered. "But I'm sure if he did, he would not take much!" Cynraede giggled while looking up at her and whispered. "One day, I won't ever be afraid of the dark  or anything in it. I'll be strong, and brave like the stories you've told me! One day, I will be your champion." Alkawen tucked him in carefully and nodded. "That you will child, but even champions need rest."

Cynraede's small hand reached out to hers as he looked to her once more. "Would you sing me to sleep? Please?" Alkawen nodded and took a seat beside his bed once more, and began to sing with a voice that seemed heavenly.

"Lay down your head, and I'll sing you a lullaby. Back to years of loo-li lai-lay and I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow. Bless you with love for the road that you go. May you sail fair to the far fields of fortune, with diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet. May you never need to banish misfortune, may you find kindness in all that you meet. May there always be angels to watch over you, to guide you each step of the way. To guard you and to keep you safe from all harm. Loo-li Loo-li lai-lay. May you bring love and you bring happiness. Be loved in return to the end of your days. Now fall off to sleep, I'm not meaning to keep you. I'll just sit for awhile and sing Loo-li lai-lay.  May there always be angels to watch over you, to guide you each step of the way. To guard you and keep you safe from all harm, loo-li lai-lay."

The woman smiled, his tiny hand still in hers. "Rest well my Cynraede, and sweet dreams."
