Danger Around the Corner
Carlotta pressed herself against the rock. In the distance, shouting could be heard, as well as some sort of light coming from behind them, evidenced by the bright glow cast on the grass beside the boulder, and the boulder's own lengthening shadow. The shouting grew closer and could now be clearly understood; "Down with the Elf-lover, Down with the Slave-Sorceress!". It was an angry mob from Trestlebridge, wielding pitchforks and lit torches, formed into a tight clump and moving behind the boulder; The way Carlotta and Redain had escaped Trestlebridge prior, with the unfortunate Redain having to barely dangle by Carlotta's hand as she rode away on her horse, dragging the former Slave-mistress along the horse.
It was too late for a detour to Bree-town now, Carlotta knew this. Trestlebridge had obviously sent an Outrunner or messenger of some sort to warn the town that two criminals were headed down the Greenway, and most likely, the town itself.
