Denholm, Captain of the Garrison at Bancross,
Again this be delivered to you by my man Ealdbriht, who you now recognise well.
One does not often thank any for doing their duty, however my thanks go to you and your folk for carrying out my orders so precisely. Word has reached me indirectly that you have indeed apprehended a spy in his schemes. May you now do the same with the main cause of trouble, and arrest Criba. Alas, I must bid you keep both at Bancross for the time being, as I fear a means for them to escape would be devised here in Edoras by their master.
I cannot say much more at this moment, as my attention is focused on the wagging tongues of those Lords who seek ill for our folk, and perhaps even for Theoden King. Their present source of information on our village has been severed. They will doubtlessly seek to establish another.
My recent weeks in Bancross have but heartened me by the strength and stubbornness of those who dwell there. Simple folk for the most part, but all are Eorlingas. Sorely do our foes underestimate us. Take note though, Captain, we must never underestimate them, nor the means to which they will stoop to achieve their goals.
As to the matter of the relic. I now know what form it takes. A silver-like dish, of elven make but undecorated in any of their known styles. I also am now certain it was buried deep in the lands of Bancross.
If by chance, any happen upon a silver dish of extraordinary craftsmanship, I bid you recompense them, and keep it guarded. I doubt it will be so easily found after these years.
I leave you with some glad tidings, however. The status of the garrison has been reported to those who sought to attack. If what I hear be truth, and be aware that my information may prove false, the planned attack has been delayed until the weather worsens at least. I have overheard that a certain group may return East, while the orc parties will head West. By no means do I believe they will not return in due course. Much is amiss in the Mark.
I shall return around the time of the apple harvest, and instruct further on all matters.
Averel, Thane of Bancross
