” As the carriage creaked and swinged from side to side moving over the bridge, leaving the town of Dale behind, the small girl sat wide eyed in the lap of the woman.

” We should just get rid of her” the woman said to the man driving the carriage.

” I said no, woman! I will repay my debt” he answered , his voice angry and tired, swinging the large whip over the horses heads, hurrying them on.

”And what if they come after us? No one will ever believe us! I say we get rid of her right here and now! ” the woman said, her voice high pitched and yelling as she lifted the girl out of her lap, holding her out of the side of the wagon, dangling her dangerously over the black, fast moving water of the river beneath the bridge.

The carriage came to a quick halt as the man pulled hard on the reins, making the horses slide into a stop, whinnying loudly as they did. Leaning over the woman he wrestled the girl out of her grip without a sound before setting himself back down again, this time placing the girl in his own lap.


” I WILL repay my debt. I am a man of honour, and I stand by my word. I am expecting you to never utter a word about her heritage to anyone, and treat her as your own from this day forward. Do you hear me?” he said, his voice ice cold, the tone of it clearly stating he was not to be opposed on the matter.
Silence settled between the man and the woman as the carriage hurridly drove off the bridge and disappeared down the road in the darkness of night.
