Outward Appearance

Adel is of Northman stock, standing a half-head taller than most other men. His skin is fair, calloused, and weathered by age and toil. His face is colored with a tinge of red across the point of his nose and the swells of his cheeks. Adel's hair and beard are untamed, colored like charcoal with strands and streaks of pure white. His limbs have been made strong and sturdy from a life of labor, while his middle-sections have been made round and soft from an an unabashed appreciation for food and ale. Adel moves at an unhurried pace, though his stride is often marked with surety and weight.

Though Adel is often serious and unforthcoming, his eyes reveal his emotions clearly. Joy, anger, astonishment, and sorrow can all easily be read in the wrinkle of his brow and the gestures on his cheeks. The expression he wears the most, however, is an outward weariness typical of many Woodmen; an exhaustion born from a constant, sleepless vigilance against the Shadow over Mirkwood.

With long draws and a steady air, Adel's lungs bare a strength and capacity rivaling the bellows of a forge. In the coldest days of the year, the fog of his escaping breath appears like a thick cloud, streaming over him like a mantle or an apron. His voice is a low, resonant rumble like distant thunder. His words are spoken clearly, unwhispered, unstuttered, and without needless embellishment.

Background

he and the forest, alone together —
the springs that come and the summers that go,
autumn dew on bracken and heather,
the drip of the forest beneath the snow...
all the things they have seen,

all the things they have heard:
an April sky swept clean and the song of a bird.

— an excerpt from "The Charcoal Burner"
A. A. Milne; Now We Are Six (1927)

Adel (W, [ˈɑːdəl]) is a Woodman forester and charcoal burner, residing in the wilderness outside of Hultvís. He is responsible for providing firewood, charcoal, wood tar, pitch, and resin to the nearby settlements along the western edge of Mirkwood

To be a charcoal burner is considered a necessary peril, as one must often work in seclusion beyond the safety of palisades and hedges, so that others may warm themselves, their families, their forges, and their food; even in the darkest night, even in the coldest winter.

History

Like many Wilderfolk, Adel has braved tragedy, toil, affliction, and a war against an ever-encroaching darkness. In the Fourth Age, Adel is among the outspoken that insist that Rhovanion remain free and untamed. — The Burl of Hárvang
