Outward Appearance

A tall, stocky and inelegant old woman, it is hard to tell if Trevedis was beautiful in her youth but she certainly is not now. Her face seems more lines than anything else, creases and a dull tint to her dark skin telling her age and the hardship of her lifestyle. Still, she is not bent as one might imagine, and her movements are easier and more fluent than you would expect from a centenarian.

All of this, coupled with eyes that have a sharp glint to them, would make you assume her to be a spritely fifty, perhaps nearing sixty in age. This is compounded by her voice that, whilst scratching, is still strong enough to bark admonishments and hiss cautions. Her manner is essentially equivolent to a particularly strict school mistress, unfeminine and clear.

She is always dressed in practical attire, rough spun cloths and leathers when at leisure,  more hardened ranger-wear and even chainmail when out in the wilderness. She seems ready for any eventuality with knives, twine and various other resources somehow always on hand. Her hair is always slightly mussed, but never in the way, obviously the victim of her own attempts at cutting it. It’s previously dark black is fading slowly to grey and silver.

Background

To most around Esteldin, the idea of Trevedis ever being young seems very strange indeed. Similarly, the idea of her eventually dying also sounds impossible. She is a permanent and reliable fixture in a world that gets more dangerous and worrying every year. Children that cursed her for her hard nature and strict rules grow into adults who quietly value her presence as their elder. Though, indeed, none would ever say as much out loud.

Though midwife she may be, her main duties for time immemorial have been corralling the children of Rangers, teaching them their ways, the paths through the wilds, the history in their blood. She was a somewhat harsh taskmaster, though not without empathy or kindness, and many generations of little ones have grown into steadfast and reliable men and women under her tutelage. From reading stories to babies and putting them firmly to bed, to dragging teens out into the frigid cold to learn how to survive in their wild and dangerous home, Trevedis did it all.

She is a grandmother figure to all of Esteldin, even though, as far as any can tell, she has no children of her own. And indeed none could really say much of her heritage or relatives, her dark skin a curious rarity among the Dunadain. But none care for such things either when Trevedis has been their 'Granbear' and 'Old nan' since their birth, and their parents' too. Perhaps her rusty aptitude for combat is curious, and perhaps her uncanny ability to disappear into any wilderness sparks questions, but few seem brave enough to ask. They trust she knows what she's doing and accept her experience.

The only clue to her younger life and the origins of her talents are the long trips she takes at times. She may be gone for months but she always returns bearing strange little gifts for her latest creche, toys and cloths and other such treats from the north and west. These trips have grown fewer as age has rested heavier upon her shoulders and some brave souls have suggested she slow her efforts, but they are rebuffed unanimously.
