Messages to the Shire

Dema had traveled from Breeland to the Shire as fast as her little pony could take her. She had been given a letter to deliver to the Gatekeeper at Brightdown village and a second letter that was to be taken to an address in Songburrow. The distance did not bother Dema she enjoyed her travels and it was good to have something to keep her occupied.

She had been given the job of messenger a few months ago by a man passing through the Shire. Dema had liked the man, normally she kept well away from most folk even Hobbits but this man seemed different and Dema liked the little sparrow that was perched on the top of his hat. He told Dema that he needed someone he could trust and who could travel about without attracting attention to deliver important messages that he could not trust to the Shire Quickpost or the Breeland Mail.

As Dema approached the outskirts of Brightdown the sun was setting and Dema could see the Gatekeeper was in the process of closing the gate so she quickly leapt off her pony and ran up the lane. Thrusting the letter into the surprised Hobbits hands she did not wait for a reply, she was already on her way back to her pony for the second leg of her journey.
