Return to Isengard, Part 10

If their sister Thibinoriel had accompanied them on this journey, Eregiel and Calentauriel may have heard her share this background information about their destination:

Amroth, a Grey Elf living in the Sylvan realm of Laurelindórenan east of the Hithaeglir, was a prince. He became king after his father Amdír was slain during the fateful Battle of Dagorlad at the end of the Second Age.

~Prince Amroth~

King Amroth loved Nimrodel, a golden-haired lady of the Sylvan folk, and she loved him in return. She would not marry him, however, until they could live in peace in a land without war. Together they decided to leave their homeland of Lothlórien, as Laurelindórenan became known in the Third Age, in search of the haven of Edhellond on the Bay of Belfalas in southwestern Gondor. From there they would sail west to Eldamar in the blessed realm of Aman.

Tragically, Amroth and Nimrodel became separated when she became lost in the woods of the Ered Nimrais. Amroth continued the journey to Edhellond in hope that he would meet her there. He boarded a ship that was ready to depart, but bid them wait until Nimrodel had arrived. Alas, the ship became unmoored during a storm. Amroth, not wishing to depart without Nimrodel, leapt overboard but was drowned attempting to swim to shore. (1)

The story of Amroth and Nimrodel is told in song, this being a portion of it:

Amroth beheld the fading shore
Now low beyond the swell,
And cursed the faithless ship that bore
Him far from Nimrodel.

Of old he was an Elven-king,
A lord of tree and glen,
When golden were the boughs in spring
In fair Lothlórien.

From helm to sea they saw him leap,
As arrow from the string,
And dive into the water deep,
As mew upon the wing.

The wind was in his flowing hair,
The foam about him shone;
Afar they saw him strong and fair
Go riding like a swan.

But from the West has come no word,
And on the Hither Shore
No tidings Elven-folk have heard
Of Amroth evermore.

~The Falls of Nimrodel~

It is told that one of Nimrodel's maidens, Mithrellas, was found by Imrazôr the Númenórean, a nobleman of Gondor. They were later wed. Their son Galador became the first Lord of Dol Amroth. That ancestry has been carried through their bloodline, and may now be found in Prince Imrahil and his daughter Lothíriel.
