Whatever was sneaking round the south hedge seems to have given up for now. No new reports or complaints. I'm still walking there a few extra times a day, just to make sure nothing gets missed. The Captain suggested hiring a proper hunter to check the fields down that way at night. Mayhap that's a good idea. I'll keep it in the back of my head.
All's been quiet elsewise, except for some missing batches of eggs around the Alley. I reckon it's a stray dog that's just too wily to be caught, as nobody's seen a person caught in the act or running from the scene. Widow Greenbank says she sat out a pan of bread to cool and it vanished, too, right out of the pan. Not much I can do unless someone sees a thief they can point to or describe for me. Can't really set a Watch officer to stand around guarding eggs and bread all night. I did see an odd young lady hanging about the area a few times, but she didn't appear to be thin or starving and didn't strike me as the mischievous type. Of course, that doesn't mean much, as the most desperate folk learn to make you see what they want you to see.
